Went to the boat show and I felt that I would like to pass a few comments:
First of all I was disgusted that the entrance fee was 5 Euro and the parking fee of 3.50 euro and a cold cappuccino 1.70.
The boat fair didnt seem to attract a lot of people (I went twice and in both occasions there were a handful of people going round the stands).
the Exhibitors seem to dwindle each year, as a matter of fact I promised myself that this will be my last boat show that I will attend here in Malta. It seemed more important to me to go meet some friends rather than seeing whats new in boating.
The two New products that impressed me most were Petecraft with the 20' caddy cabin and the Buccaneer with the 18' open boat, which also had a sketch for a caddy cabin.
The finish on both boats is excellent with Petecraft taking the better finish of the two.
The fastfisher (petecraft) seemed narrower than the Buccaneer but in actual fact it is wider by .25mtr.
I have not tested the boats in the water which is what a boat is all about BUT was given information by a reliable source that they both handled very well in force 3/4 seas. Both gave a dry ride with 8 people on board planning very quickly and effortlessly. Petecraft had 140hp Suzuki on it and Buccaneer had a 90hp Suzuki.
Petecraft was tested in rougher seas and it came out with flying colours being driven by a veteran boat tester loaded with 8 persons on board.
The Buccaneer has not yet been tested in rough weather, not intentionally but the opportunity and the time to do a test in similar conditions to the other boat has not arisen. This test will hopefully be conducted in the near future.
In my opinion (and I am no expert) both boats are very well suited for our seas and what most members of our forum use them for that is both pleasure (family outing) and fishing (trolling, diving, jigging, longlining etc)
The only difference is the Price:
Petecraft boat has a hefty price tag of 15800 euro and the Buccaneer is a low down earthly price of 8,800 Euro yes you guys heard right (3778 Maltese lira) Well done Buccaneer Boats. If you guys keep that price and the finish you have on that boat I guarantee it will be a winner.
When one has to add the motor since the petecraft 20' needs a bigger engine price wise it goes up higher.
In my opinion the Buccaneer is a better value although we have to wait to see what price it ends up when the caddy cabin is added on.
I would like to say Thanks to all boat builders in Malta who are producing products that not only compete but surpass foreign made boats.
Mecca marine and Hitech marine were both present with a very good display of boats. The outboard motor dealers also made a good contribution to the show.
