Hey Guys..

Sorry if this question doesn't make any sense or shows my limited knowledge of fishing - but if you never ask questions you remain ignorant forever!!

I was wondering if it is possible (or if it even makes sense) to set up a type of Lure chart, or at least guidlines which could help when choosing lures.

For example, tonight I will be going trolling about 7nm out and I always try to pick up some different lures to see how they go - I picked up a Halco Streaker 10g and a Twisty Chrome 10g.  Are they to small/too big (hardly likely)? Is there are rough guidline: i.e. 5g lure for 2kg fish, 10g lure for 4kg fish, 20g lure for 6kg fish?

Apart from that, if people don't mind - it may be a good idea for people to list what they catch and on what lures (unless it's a close guarded secret ;D) which could help increase everyone's catch.

I know fishing is not as simplistic as I made it seem above - but a rough guidline would help the new guys out a lot.

In any case I am out tonight with my 10g Halcos - if I get anything be sure you'll have the post tomorrow..

Happy Fishing..

Never be afraid or shy to ask questions about anything in life. It is the best way to learn. It would be great if it was that simple. i always use lures that suit the fish l am chasing, but that does not mean that l catch what l am after ever time.I think that the most important thing is that you are able to adapt for what is thrown at you. Try and have a good range of lures in your tackle box, and on a slow day try changing lures around to suit what's on the bite. The best thing you can do is seek local knowledge, as this will get you there alot quicker. I belive though that lures catch more fishermen than fish. Check out how small this fish is going for a lure nearly the same size.  Best of luck tonight!!!!

Man that was quick!!!

Thanks twoutes - I knew it could never be THAT simple - I was just getting tired of spending hours at the tackle shop mesmerised by the variety!!  In any case, what I have done is set up a small fishing log where I will at least be able to list what I catch and on what, which I am sure will help me catch on quicker...

Nice catch by the way  ;)

Thanks!!! Its called an Archer Fish. They are plentyfull in the rivers in Cape York. We were however fishing for Barrumandi. We managed to catch 91 fish in 4 days of fishing, and released all but 4 or so fish that we ate on our trip. The photo attched is of the biggest Barrumandi for the trip. Once again l hope you have lots of luck tonight!!!

Another nice one - how do you fish for those anyway - and it reminds me of the carp we used to catch in Canada - is it from the same family or is it a type of bass??

It's a closer relation to bass. THey have what we call 'Bucket Mouths' THey just engulf whatever swims by their hide away. We use Bibbed lures that we cast close to branches in the rivers and creeks where they are hiding. On this particular trip they were going for gold coloured small bibed lures that don't dive as deep. Swimming action and the rattle of the lure is a very important factor as well.

What are the thoughts concerning the lure spread, specifically depths? Most lures are usually trolled on the surface or they swim up and down just below, but lately we've been trying to experiment with planers (cheap man's downrigger) to present some of the lures at 3-5m below the surface. Didn't have any luck yet but was wondering what everyone things about getting the lures down?

Well back from a couple of hours out - nothing to show for it today but we were out pretty early (got out at 17:30 and were back in by 19:30

Tried Halco Twisty and Streaker 10g, as well as my Rapala CD01 - Rainbow Trout Minnow

The Halco's we trolled around 6kn 5nm out - and the Rapala @ around 3kn just off the shore....

Hopefully tomorrow's bottom fishing will yield better results..

In regards to the lure spread, we tend to run 4 lures, but this is with the aid of outrigger poles, which take the lures another 5 metres wider than the boat on each side, allowing tighter turns and NO tangles when 'hooked up'. With the use of downriggers or planers or simply a large sinker tied to your swivel with cotton so it can break off easily when hooked up, you can also run 4 lures. You can achieve different depths with bibed lures depending on the size of the bib and how far you run them back. I tend to put my lures where my Sounder shows me the depth the fish are at. We also run a teaser of one sort or another to raise fish and attract them to the boat, varying from 'Witch doctors' ,'Birds and Skirts','Daisy Chains' or very large hookless bibbed lures. I find that it is best to 'keep it simple' though and only run 2 lures and a teaser. It can become CHAOS when you get hit with a school of fish with too much gear in the water, unless you are on a big boat with a well tuned team. The most important thing is to get out there, and put in the hours. And remember to have fun!!!!

Dear all,

I am more than willing to start a chart of somesorts with what catches we have had where with a bearing from malta and distance with most importantly of all the lure that worked with what weather conditions etc etc....

If we all give our serious input with photos to back up i am sure that in a season we can have already gathered substantial information about the basics...

I shall start this year and i hope you too!
