Not comparable to your catches surely but still a nice catch on light tackle

Good season so far.....

Wow those are very nice, from shore or on a small boat? Quantity is sometimes nicer than 2 large ones.

we caught those from shore from wied il ghajn in approximately 3hrs. we had also some sparli and mullet which were all thrown away, even some mullet of the photo( we kept only five of them). A keepnet is essential in mullet fishing, a fish which is a highly slow growing. also i can note we had some big hook ups but got away immediately after. probably they were very big xilep(bream) or sawrell ta l imperial.

Beautiful Catch - any ideas on weights of the mullet - they look quite large.  I would be interested to know what you were fishing with and at what time...my results off Zonqor point have not been very fruitful in the past.

Once again - nice catch...

i can't tell you exactly about the weight but approximately they weighted around the 1.5 kgs altogether ( some are not in the photo and it isĀ  an estimate). the most important is the catch and release guys, it is important if we want to catch bigger mullet from shore. usually i use farka for mullet if there is no vopi present. thus it is becoming quite uneffective as the vopi is getting near to shores

nice catch granitu....... at what time did you catch them..? early evening?
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.  Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Men and fish are alike.  They both get into trouble when they open their mouths

If these where caught in a clean place, these are the beste. They dont grow big theses type. They are with a yellow patch on their face. The best in tast. Nice catch

don' t know exactly, but went for a 3hr fishing evening at salina. from where the nasty smell comes... and caught (and released) around 10 mullet all having the yellow spot emicmalta talked about...don't you think those mullets are not good for eatinG?

i think the sea is polluted there...

We have a species of mullet here in south wales at a place called Llangenith Beach, which is an Atlantic storm beach, which are called golden grey mullet. They have a gold spot, about the size of a thumb print on the shoulder of the fish just behind the gills. They are quite rare to catch. Some people spend months trying to catch one instead of the normal grey mullet.
If you can't eat it don't kill it.

EmicMalta

no they arent good to eat from that place altought that there are people that eat every thing. Mullets is very common and it s easy to catch that at several technicks.

There is only few places where can be caught clean so check for places that has their envierment

no i didn't eat them... as emic said. probably they are polluted... been a while since i posted those photos, caught others bigger(1-2 kgs range) but the pariti problem is everywhere as soon as they see you catching something that is it.
from that photo, i rekon that we kept 5 of those. i usually give some of them to a friend of mine. he cooks them for his dogs(stray dogs)
Once i did gave them to a friend( a catch of 20+) and he eat them all togethjer with his family and he didn't experience any food poison. and marsaxlokk is in fact a very polluted area!
But better safe than sorry.
Also mullet is a very good bait for bottom fishing

thnks emicmalta and granitu..... i rarely eat mullet since it isn't a fish of my like.
but still i never caught the big mullet yet... what could i use to attract more mullet guys?
for ground bait i use bread crumbs with a lot of water and add milk too...proteins!

is the mix effective? (rarely for me) can someone please give me some clues on what can i try more... to add with the ground bait mix.

thnks

Hi fava,
A good thing to mix with your groundbait (apart from milk) is "cefalo" mix which you can buy from mister fish it has a very strong 'cheese smell' very much like 'gobon tas-sajd' but not as pungent!  you only need to put a bit with your groundbait and dont mix your groundbait with too much water, but just enough to be able to form it into a ball in your hand before you throw it in.
A good place to go for big mullett is in tax biex in front of the embassy (near Black Pearl) but you need to get there early as there will be alot of people fishing there.
Also some of the 'banjiet' there are quite deep (around 9m being the deepest and some a 7m rod is perfect) so you if you are using a pole you will need a 9m rod for the deeper ones as you need to fish about 30cm off the bottom to get the big guys! i used to go regular(ish) there and 2kg mullett were common, however i have a friend who goes regular and he said its more in the 1-1.5kg range now.
You can fish with 'farka' there but if there are alot of small vopa they will eat your bait instantly and in that case your best bet is to use 'maguna' that is bread soaked in water and then you knead as much of the water out as possible, you can also put a bit of 'cefalo' with this mixture too as it can be good especially on slow days.

ohh great...i've never tried fishing in those areas since i live in the north.. but still i would one day give it a go there..! i normally go to salina (near coastline) but the fish there vanished. maybe they migrated to the black pearl... hehe

just a small question....  sardine oil is or is not good for catching mullet?!?

[[i think for vopi it's best to use it for vopi.]]

Fish On!
