Guys I have the intent to buy a rod and reel to troll with live bait on my rib.
My aim is either dentex or AJ.

I have visited many local shops and many of them differ in ideas, so I might take your professional opinion and suggestions.
My main issues are:
1/ Type of rod and length.. Is is preferibly with rollers or not?? Best to use braid or nylon? What Lb should the rod be?
2/ Type of reel and size....  Should it be with line winder (if i say it right) or without, lever drag?
3/ Can I use the same rod for alungi?

My aim is to buy a rod for multiple use, and not the top of the range since that I never used a trolling rod.
I may also opt to use the same rod for bottom fishing...

Someone told me to use the same reel Ryobi AP power 8000 that I use for jigging, and buy another rod..
I am lost....

for live bait trolling go with overhead reels and/not roller guides rod... they are far more convenient than any other setup you can imagine.

as for an overhead, i would give a deep thought the alutecnos gorilla a very good reel for this job, however so is the price.... depends how much you are willing to fork out :P
Good season so far.....

it's really a personal choice benri i find them very effective but i was chatting with a friend of mine, an old school fisherman in live bait trolling he is against roller guides at all cost, the risk of braid being stuck between guides for him is a note of concern.

it is a matter of personal chioce really, i find them to be advantageous, others don't. a note of fact is that they have to be rinsed after use and lubricated every season if one wants to enjoy them in the longer term.

it is the end result that counts... i.e. the fish... many of the rest is all market diversification and market hype to trigger spending.... in fishing it is all about that benri

sometimes we have to admit that the market offers market hyped products through advertising and biased supposed to be impartial reviews... and we get caught in all this market hype

Good season so far.....

Baghira......for Aj u have an idea of what set up u need as that was a fine specimen of a fish that u caught, an AJ will give u a bit more pull. If u intend to use braid then its not just a matter of rollers against guides but also if the guides support the braid.
I use mine for trolling as well as bottom fishing...But as granitu said u have to be careful that the line especially the braid (which is rather thin) does not get between the first roller and the side.. I lost about 300 mtrs of braid this way.
I would opt for a guide suitable for braid rather stiff (but not a broom stick). I have noticed that my stiff one shows more bites that a softer one that bends a lot and the bites are hardly noticeable. this when using a 2 kg weight for deep sea. with 1 kg the rod showed signs of bites.
for trolling Alungi whatever rod u use it is good.
Jigging is another story u need a good rod for that specially for jigging.
We will be at club tomorrow if u want to pop over. If u are coming why not ask Benri to bring his jigging set up with him and u can see it.
I have one at the club but not to the same class as benri's.

Baghira in my opinion you could go for a solterra rod 30-50lb and solterra 30lb reel setup. Prices are quite reasonable and quality and aftersales is superb!
It should be a good all round setup for live bait trolling and also alongi & family :)
Of course opinions differ!

Hi baghira, in my opinion the best setup is an okuma solterra 20-30lb 5.6 feet. Because its a medium action rod which can also be used for alungi. Moreover lighter lines can be used. My preference is also guides although the solterra has one roller at the top and 2 rollers at the bottom. For the guides make sure that they are Fuji because its one of the best brands. With regards to reel its better without level winder because if you have a knot somewhere along the line might get stuck in the level winder during the fight. Preferably the reel should be size 30 the like okuma makaira 30, tica 30, shimano tyrnos 30 and the like.

In my setup I use braid in the range approx. 300m of 0.40/0.60 diameter with the last 12-15 fathoms of line joined together with a special knot similar to the one of jigging. But the line/braid setup is according to one's preference.

Hope the above helps :)
