I need help with choosing a rod for deep drop fishing.
Will a 30 Lb rod give you better feel of any action as opposed to say a 50lb?
I have read that the stronger deep drop reels can also be used as downriggers.
Will I be able to do this using a 30 lb rod, or will i need to buy a specialised rod/ pole?
Is a bent butt rod easier, more practical to use, then a normal straight rod? I need 2 feet from rod holder to clear the bathing platform?
Sorry for asking so many questions but I don't want to buy the wrong tool for the job.
Thanks

You should start with the reel first not the rod.
Then as rod I would recommend the 30lb one or something like 20/50 for deep drop but have no idea about downrigger.

to add to Moonwalker, the bent butt are good but u will have to take out the rod from the holder, everytime u bring up the bait/fish. better u rig out a contraption to be able to fish and lift the rod without taking it out of the rod holder/contraption.
I have a 50/80 trolling rod and it works perfectly the tip wiggles with every bite.
regarding the downrigger u can use the reel to lift the weight automatically like a down rigger but while u are trolling i suggest u lock the line with the boat cleat as all the drag will be on the reel's drag and it is not made for that kind of punishment. the downriggers usually have a sort of bolt to lock the spool in place and take the weight off the motor.

I see your point Moonwalker, sorry I should have pointed out that I have my eyes on a Kristal 621 D.
So now I am looking for a rod that would compliment / work well with this reel.
I think I would have to remove the rod from the holder everytime anyway unless I rig up a holder that pivots like shanok suggests. Does anyone make / sell such a rig??
I was looking at
http://www.kristalfishing.it/Lingua%20ingelse/inglese/serie%20600/canne/canne%20pivottanti%202.html
The idea is to locate the rod hlder in one corner and swing / pivot the rod round to the other side to bring up bait / fish.
What are tha advantages / disadvantages of the CG/CKF 30-50-80 LB ?
Would this be too stiff to feel / see the bites?
Thanks for your thoughts and feedback

I'm not familiar with KF so busumark or fishfinder should give you better advice.

busumark

the KF rods are very strong but buy the 30 lbs because you can see the bites better and i think the 220 cm is better because it is more flexible since it is taller

Romel

Thanks busumark. I will take your advice and go for a KF 30Lb

Anyone have any idea whether a Penn Mariner 20-50 rod is good for deep dropping? i intend to use it with a Daiwa Tanacom Bull 1000 electric reel and i am not sure whether i will detect any bites. Thanks for any help!

Moonwalker

Thats what I am using at the moment with Miya Epoch 6HP.
Its quite good and can detect all bites but if there is one a little softer like 20-40 I think it would be better.
