Dear all,
First thing I really wish to congratulate the organizer/s of this forum, coz it was a brilliant idea particularly for a beginner like me.

I wish to ask .. in these months (October ? December) which are the best fishes to go for ? and which technique may I use ?

I going next Friday night from 12:00pm till Sat 12:00am ? starting bottom fishing till the sunrise and then sift to trolling.

And honestly am going without a clue for what kind of fish am going for, therefore no clue for hook size / bait / line and ect ?.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks a lot

Hi Clifton,

Welcome to the forum. Perhaps you could let us know what equipment you have/will be using, in terms of:

Length of Boat and HP
Number of ppl who will be on this trip

Current equipment owned, Rods, Reels, Line etc as well as perhaps indicating what your reels are spooled with, eg. 30lbs Dacron, Spectra, Mono etc.

Then you need to tell us which bay you will be departing from and how far you are willing to go out. All this kind of influences what you can go fishing for. Then I'm sure better advice can be given.

Hi Skip,

Thanks for the fast reply?

We are going to be 2 on a small 13ft boat also the outboard is very small.
The bay that we where thinking of was M`Scala bay  or maybe B`Bugia,
I don?t know about the distance , I assume 2 kilometers aprox.

About the equipment I already own a bit of every thing, but that is not a problem coz am ready to buy all the necessarily.

Regarding yr question   ?your reels are spooled with, eg. 30lbs Dacron, Spectra, Mono etc?  (Have no idea on the difference)

regards

skip was referring to the type of line you have spooled (imkebba) in your reel. dacron and spectra are a type of a braided lines used for bottom fishing while mono's tend to be used more for trolling. there is a particular post in this forum if you want concerning the types of lines and uses.

regarding your fishing trip i suggest you bbugia if you are going trolling, make sure you have the right equipment for tumbrell as is is full of them right now while i would suggest mscala for bottom fishing and also you may encounter some lampuki (surface)if you intend go near the fish farms (it may be far)

Good season so far.....

Hi Nicholas,

Regarding the lines I will take a good look there.

So in these months ? trolling for tumbrell and bottom fishing for lampuki.

Thanks for the reply and suggestions

For your type of fishing, 30lbs trolling rods with 30lbs reels would be more than sufficient. I would aim for having two rods out at the same time as you are trolling, and make sure you carry a good mix of lure type and size. Spinning spoons seem to be good at this time of year from what I was reading, I know I need to get some myself to add to the tackle draw. The above would also let you troll for Lampuki.

For bottom fishing, you usually want a reel with a high gear ratio for a faster retreive rate, electric reels are very expensive and at the distance from the shore that you mentioned I doubt you would need.

Spectra (like Power pro) is very good for bottom fishing you can feel the bites better and being much much narrower than mono in diameter you can get much more line on the reel than you would compared to mono.

For trolling you can either go with Spectra backing to get some line capacity on the reel and then say 75-100 yards of mono top shot which you join to the Spectra. If you going to do that I suggest you buy hollow core Spectra so that you can splice the mono up inside the Spectra. If you go on Powerpro.com you will find some tips. Jerry Brown Hollow Core spectra is very good too but you can't get that locally.

hi skip,

thanks for the suggestion

i purchased the trolling rod and the high gear reel plus a good variety of lure .... e.g tumbrell ..lanpuki

reg the line i went for the "berkley big game" 0.56mm, and am a bit puzzled with what can i temporary replace "Jerry Brown Hollow Core spectra" for the last 75-100 yards.

coz am going next Friday and powerpro need more time to deliver.

Cliff,

You can still fish with your 0.56mm mono on that reel and leave it like that for now. I believe PowerPro are now also offering some kind of hollow core Spectra in addition to the Jerry Brown stuff, but as I'm sure you saw they're not cheap. Remember the Spectra goes on the reel first and will form the bulk of your line, the mono will be the last 75-100 yards which gives you the stretch needed for trolling when fishing for big game. For bottom fishing you could stick to all Spectra/PowerPro.

Another option would be to use a 25 meter wind on leader so that you can be configured mostly for fishing with the spectra and then join the spectra with the wind on leader for when you go trolling. That will at least give you 25 meters of stretch in the line. Momoi make some good wind on leaders, just make sure you get flourocarbon and match it at 30lbs. That way you would have 30lbs Spectra and 30lbs wind on leader.

If you're going to do the above as let's say bottom fishing is your main activity then you don't need hollow core Spectra you can use the standard stuff. Hollow core is used when you want to keep the mono top shot and mostly for trolling.

I think you can find PowerPro up to 30lbs from Fishing World in Naxxar, my only concern is that he doesn't have the big spools. He sells them in like smaller 100m spools which is no good as you want no joins in the Spectra. Also before spooling the Spectra to your reel make sure you put a piece of that grey Gaff tape around the reel spindle, which helps the Spectra grip and not bite in to the reel.

Otherwise if not using Spectra get a low stretch mono for bottom fishing.

if you are going bottom fishing where you said you can use have 100m of .40mm normal mono than a swivel and you make a paternoster rig with .30mm mono. if you are using a rod. if you dont want to use a rod put 100m of .80mm normal mono with a .35mm paternoster rig on a sufra it comes a lot cheaper and you still have good results. i tried bottom fishing with flourocarbon line and the other guy who was with me with normal mono and didnt see any difference. we caught same amount of fish
