Hi Guys,

I am willing to buy a carbon rod as i think that my rod and fishing line is not giving me the best result i can have but i have a lot of queries about carbon rods like:

1. Can you lift a big catch on it?
2. What casting range shall i buy it (I cast with a maximum of 40grms)?
3. What brand is best when you mention spinning with braided line?
4. What should the the guides be, so that they are good for braid?

Thanks

you need a good solid tip rod ... just do not be fooled by brands some of which only their entry level rods are on the market with a very high price tag.

The Ron Thompson Tyran is a very good rod with a good price tag. I witnessed nice 5 and 6 kgs lifts on such rod. There are also better rods like the Shakespeare Ugly Sticks, Shimanos and Daiwas but be aware of the price my friend.

Personally i recommend the Ron Thompson Tyran found in various local fishing shops like Southdive Zurrieq and Ta Bormla in Mosta as the best value for money locally
the fishing gods might have something for me tomorrow I'll be fishing

Carbon or Graphite rods are better suited for spinning because they are lighter, however keep in mind that they are more fragile. carbon rods will not tolerate being bang or dropped, because hairline cracks will form in the blank material.

Quote1. Can you lift a big catch on it?

Certain rods will allow you to lift fish cleanly out of the water, Shore Jigging rods are tough enough to do this but seriously, WHY? You risk damaging your rod and you risk loosing your catch too.  Stick to long Gaffs and don't lift big fish out of the water on a rod.

Quote2. What casting range shall i buy it (I cast with a maximum of 40grms)?

This depends on your style of spinning and the places you frequent the most.  If you mainly spin in ports get a 10-30g, if you do some open coast spinning a 14-42g is very versatile.  If you love metal lures then something that can launch 60g into the stratosphere is what you need.

Quote3. What brand is best when you mention spinning with braided line?

I won't mention brands so as not to be mis-understood  ::) but I will give you one piece of advice, if you are serious about spinning buy the best you can afford. Look for a light rod which will not tire you quickly, and look for an action that is best suited for the lures you intend to use.  There is no one universal rod.  I ended up with 3 spinning rods already, depending on what sort of fish I intend to target. The rod is an extension of your arm and it will enable you to work the lure properly.

Quote4. What should the the guides be, so that they are good for braid?

Aluminium Oxide, Alconite, Silicon Carbide or if your really want to Gold Cermet.

Solid tip rods are not normally employed in traditional spinning the tip is far too sensitive.  Those are commonly found in Light Rock Fishing, what the japs call mebaru, and they are usually limited to just 5g casting weight.

As for expensive entry level rods, I do not agree with you at all on this point.  Some high end rods from Manufactures that produce bargain rods do not even begin to compare with other entry level rods from those 'expensive' brands.  An entry level rod from Evergreen is light years ahead than most high end rods from popular brands.

The price in a rod reflects the material it is made of.  High modulous graphite costs it's weight in gold.  Even Intermediate Modulous graphite rods are still quite expensive.  I had bought my GLoomis SAR1024S for €200 and that is an Intermediate modulous rod. High Mod rods can be 3 or 4 times that price.

And before anyone asks why should one spend that money on a rod, well try and get the chance to spend 4 hours straight spinning with a high end rod and you'll know why.  I had the chance a while ago to do a spinning session with an Evergreen PZS-94, it is a 9'4 rod nearly one foot longer than my Loomis. My rod felt like a heavy broom stick after that :(

Guys before I started out as a spinner I did some research of rod and reel brands that were suitable to my budget being a student and all . . . and reading many in international forums.

Majorcraft have a selection of rods which are MORE than good value for money not to mention the high end rods they produce are top notch. . . I spin at an average of 3-6 hrs everyday and my MajorCraft Solpara SPS-862ML 10-30g never gets me fatigued and it is nicely balanced with a Shimano Stradic 4000Fi. . .I won't talk about this reel cause it has been recieving praises and reviews all over the net so it's useless boring you with my testimony about this reel :D

I think I started out with some very good equipment and when you see that I have just been spinning for 2 months (alaqthom last Saturday :p) I have caught some reasonable catches and pls NEVER lift a fish out of the water cause you might damage the rod and loose the catch. . .

And the greatest satisfaction in this hobby is catch and release especially these small Amberjacks. . .remember 1 day it will be a BIG ONE :)

Here are some of my memorable catches as a short life spinner  :P :P

Leccia Amia 4.7Kg

Another Leccia Amia 4.5Kg

Barracuda 2.7Kg

Caranx Crysos 1.8Kg

and not to show off but here are all my catches in an album :)

haha daqs kemm jghid haddihor lol

I researched a lot to find habitats to suit a lot of fish and other spinners can do the same. . .it will be a challenge and it will be a Great reward if you catch that particular type of fish that you will be fishing for :)
