so today i went for the first time spinning, mainly aiming for a barracuda using a rapala lure !! when i was fishing a few things started to come in my mind :-

- when you are reeling in do you need to go fast or slow ??
- do you need to make any movement with the rod ??
- how deep should the lure go ?? (rapala maxrap flake silver blue mackerel)

thx for your help :)

Though that lure is sinking, the maxrap is really good for cudas. In my opinion you have to go slow and jerk alot :) try it that way, you should get results ;)

The Max Rap is one of the best lures in the market . When you are reeling in try to vary the retrieve speed and add , stop and go and even some jerks . The best size in my opinion for barras is 170 and even the 150 size is an all rounder too . Good Luck for your next session  ;)

ok so went yest to try out .. there were some cudas that seem to be intelligent to catch !! cudas started to     run after the lure but no strike on it .. i tried to reel in more fast but still no results !! in my opinion i think they know what is a lure but will keep on trying because people caught cudas from the place i went :) thx

There are many factors that can affect that they don't strike/bite maybe they were eating live bait or they recognise the lure as you've said . Don't give up Matt keep trying and if you have other lure colours change ;)

ok so i have another question - what is the best thickness of line to use ?( currently using .35mm ) i read many post about this topic but still confused !! braid, mono etc  what should i use ? in my reel i want something that if i am lucky to get a nice sized fish wont get away/cut the line. it would be nice to get in detaile ex: color of braid and thickness, brand of line !! thx everyone  for your help :) sorry for all these question but i am still a beginner at spinning and need to be prepared thx

Don't hesitate to post Matt  ;) For the beginning I used mono of 0.30mm plus a 1 meter of Fluorocarbon and the diameter of the fluorocarbon must be near to the 0.40 because the barracuda's teeth cut a lot . For the beginning I give you the advice to stay with the mono because the braid may give you some problems , the main problem is the when casting it might cause knots if you're a beginner . But if you are going to change to braid in the future the best poundage of braid is 20LB and with braid you always add the 1 metre fluorocarbon , the colour of the braid it's up to you .

As a brand for braid I would choose power pro. I think it's the best found on the market. About the colour it's up to you about which one you choose but I would prefer green/ grey.

lest just start with the mono guys because of the problems saupe said about the braid ..... so what is the brand you guys recomand ?? btw today i caught my first cuda

slupu

Preferibly fluorocarbon / coating. I use falcon prestige brand. Well done for your first cuda :)

I don't believe you need to fill youer reel with florocarbon, use a good quality monofilament and use florocarbon for the leader that is the first metre or so.

agree with you , fluorocarbon is much more expensive then monofilment .
