Any Ideas  4strk 20hp  Honda or Yamaha ?......anyone already have a motor of these brands? Dealers are ok?
Can you give me an idea....
Thanks ;)

Both are great Japanese engines, however the Honda dealer in Malta was never interested in nor did he focus on the marine market. With that in mind I would steer clear, worrying about qualified mechanics with the latest Honda training?? Issues with spare parts and accessories.....unless it was an amazing price I would avoid, but maybe a Honda marine outboard owner can offer some direct insight.

Yamaha always been known for their outboards and are strong in the local market...make sure its a 2011 or 2012 model you are looking (check the id plate on the engine)

Also consider Selva from Hi-Tec Marine which are Yamaha engines with a diff engine cover/decals

You might also consider Evinrude ETEC 25HP and Suzuki 25HP if your budget and boat specs permits. Both are great engines and reliable after sales service.

Before I had already a 20hp 4 strk and it was ok so i like to keep the same power. evenrude are two stroke and suzuki dont have 20hp..thanks

Evinrude are indeed 2-Stroke......but you kinda dismissed that as being a bad thing. A modern 2 stroke DI engine gives more power than the equivalent 4 stroke and far more punch especially holeshot so it all depends on what application you want it for.

With the ETEC there is also the Optimax from Mercury/Mariner and the TLDI from Tohatsu, Yamaha HPDI

Whilst Evinrude don't make a 20hp, their 25hp is similar in weight to the Yamaha 25

He he ......forget about Mercury & Tohatsu  ;)

And i dont need power cs my boat is 13 ft and light boat....and with 20hp i do 16/18 knots for me enough.......I m
questioning about Honda or Yamaha regarding parts and mechanics and affidability.....

Raj - go and have a look at the Selva outboards.  They're basically Yamaha's on the inside,  and you will get the latest 2012 models.  These outboards are available from Hi Tec Marine.

Im sorry about that but I like renomated brands ....listen.....if you get in mind to change motor from a yamaha and honda you lose 40% and from a selva you lose 60%

@raj - I see your point.
I remember when Toyota cars where being imported to Malta, a lot of people reasoned the way you are doing now...they wanted  to stick to renowed brands, like ford, VW, ect...I also remember when skoda were introduced to the market...same arguments...Look where Toyota is now...world leader not to mention their flagship brand Lexus!...and skoda, well they have been bought out by....VW!!!!
But I see your point on resale value...I'm not into the outboard market here, so I wouldn't know what works here or not.

you 100% rt ux..... this happend even with yamaha localy cs 2strk yamaha was the name, in that time but yamaha never did 4 strk....and vice versa honda ALWAYS DID 4STRK but here(malta) there wasnt any 4strk motor. I was thinking of getting a Honda cs I dont now ...around the globe they are everywhere more expensive  than yamaha exept here in malta I dont know why!!!!!he he....Cs when you ask someone about yamaha everyone answer no 1 motor but how many of them owened a 4strk?
Thats my question cs my family we had 100s of yamaha but 2strk ...they dont know nothing about 4strk....

As I said, I don't know much about outboards, but you certainly do.  Yamaha outboards are certainly up in the front, where the air is fresh...together with Mercury, Evinrude and maybe some other brand.  It's basically down to personal choice, and what purpose will the outboard be used for...is it cruising, or trolling.  I'm no expert, as I sid, but I'm sure you'd have to match the outboard to the application...fishing trolling, or ncruising

Fair points Raj, especially concerning perception, but then I would put Honda in the same category as Selva for depreciation simply because I would have to factor in hassling myself to get parts from abroad.

Consider as the Americans say, buy the dealer not the brand and I don't think you would be wrong to stick with Yamaha but compared to the 2 stroke you had before, the F20 is heavier but will be smooth and fantastic for trolling, plus no clouds of oil coming out the back!!

I am the proud owner of a 1999 Honda BF50 (50 HP). Only issues I have ever had were fuel related and this sort of problem is common for all carburetted engines. I do get my parts from abroad not because parts are not available locally but because they are much cheaper. Local dealer will order parts for you and parts usually arrive within 15 days. Ordering from the U.S. usually takes about 3 weeks. I also do all the maintenance/service work myself.
If I had to replace my engine it would be with another Honda.
