It is that time of year which all anglers await in great anticipation as Autumn is renown as the best shore fishing season by far, but for 9 anglers in particular the anticipation has surely been much greater then that they normally experience, as these fine anglers shall be representing Malta in the forthcoming European float fishing championships which are to be held in Spain in the picturesque region of Cadiz Algeciras between the 2nd and 5th October. Float fishing here implying that it is only allowed to fish with a rod rigged with a float. The three most popular methods being, the fixed float, the running float and the waggler float, but always with a rod and reel and not with the pole as most people normally fish in Malta.
Malta will be represented with 2 teams, Malta A and Malta B. The A team consisting of 5 anglers and the B team unfortunately of only 4 anglers as one of the anglers had to pull out at the last moment and since these anglers end up by forking out all the expenses it is not easy to find a replacement. It is indeed a pity that this sport does not get the attention it deserves and there is hardly any funding allocated to it. But the good news is that B team albeit with one less will not really be in a great disadvantage as according to the rules only the weights of the best 4 in each team count. For the first time Malta is proud to field a female angler on one of the teams namely Catherine Farrugia a sure sign of the popularity of this sport by all sexes.
This is not the first experience for most of these anglers as back in 2011; Malta had also participated for the first time ever in the world championships which were held in Italy, with success.
The Teams: Team A: John Attard, Pierre Poulton, Steve Johnston, Adrian Nelson, Carmel Farrugia.
Team B: Catherine Farrugia, Dorian Formosa, Carmelo Quattrocchi, and Fortune Calafato
