Around 6 months ago i bought a vhf, standard horizon brand from the US.  Finally i found sone time to call MCA in malta to register unit and block any necessary channels.  I was told that since the unit is a US version it cannot be used in Malta, since it is not a european version.  Does anyone know what is the difference or if my unit in some way can be fixable?

For sure MCA would not approve and register your VHF if it does not carry a CE mark.  If it does, they will surely lock its US channels while leaving the european/international channels.

The probability is that it does not have a CE mark unless it is EU compatible.

Besides the channels, what is difference between CE and non CE VHFs?  I say besides the channels, because channels can be legally blocked.

Hi there,

I would like to ask if the VHF will outmatically go on the new channel for mayday / Emergency (ch69) or you need to get some one to do it for you, now that they changed the ch16, to ch69 ?

can you please reply so I get some one to do it ?

@shaftbomb

The main reason is for safety reasons. CE certified items are built / manufactured along with the european standards and thus they are certified to be circulated across europe.  Not only vhf's but almost every electrical item, toys, etc.. must carry the ce mark.  If I am not mistaken, the only thing which does not carry a CE mark are food related items.

@Digger

The VHF channel has remained Ch.16 and always will be. You are referring to the channel used by a DSC VHF when sending a digital distress message in which case when you hold and press the distress button hte VHF automatically switches to that channel to send the digital message that containts your MMSI number, GPS position if connected etc.

Channel 16 is the hailing channel and voice distress channel.
