HI TO ALL

PROSIT FOR THE USEFUL INFORMATION HOWEVER I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS WHICH I NEED ADVICE FOR.
LATELY I WENT FISHING IN A LOT OF AREAS AROUND MALTA BUT WAS NOT THAT GOOD SOMETIMES NOT EVEN A BITE. I WENT DURING NIGHTFALL AND AT DAWN BUT ONLY CAUGHT LITTLE STUFF WHIHC THEN I THROW BACK. PLACES TAHT I WENT ARE VALLETTA NEAR PIXKERIJA, POPEYE VILLAGE, BIGHI, BIRGU INFRONT OF CASINO, TA XBIEX NEAR BLACK PEARL AND ALSO SLIEMA INFRONT OF MAGIC KIOSK.

I used as bait on my paternoster rig always hniex of korea (as i tried other bait like ckal and frozen shrimp but did not work out) but only managed to get small ones using a size 8 or 7 hook with line size 22 or 25.

It seems iether i am doing something wrong or the big fish are going to school to learn to avoid fishermen :-). This is my only hobby so help is appreciated as i need to catch some nice big fish

Can anyone help me in my questions:

i am interested in spinning from land?
what lures are best?
what places should i fish from?
any techniques?
if frozen or live bait whats the best? and what technique as i only use paternoster rigs?

your help is appreciated

regards

robert

Hi Robert,

I am assuming that you are bottom fishing with a reel rod when u have mentioned those places. At this time of the year it's the worst part of the year for bottom fishing since most fish go to nest their eggs (At least that's what I heard). In my opinion you can also try the running ledger so as not always using the pater noster rig and also if possible try using some less size line for example 16. As regards spinning it matters much to what type of fish u are going to spin. For example for lizz the best lure that I have found is the clown. Whilst spinning from land for Sawrell ta Imperjal I found the minnows and white worm that work very efficient on them. For sure live bait is much better than frozen. As regards fishing at this time, the best option is I think to give it a try for awrat since there were several bays that people have caught. Places where they have caught were Mistra, Ghadira, Marsascala and B'Bugia. Sorry for being long and don't worry PATIENCE is the most important thing.

what is the best technique to fish for awrat

Somewhere on the forum there was a detailed post by Simon G.
I went fishing for awrat about 3 weeks ago... there was some awrat, but it was rather small...

Yes it's true seahunter. I have heard that at certain places like Mistra there were also some not more than 6cm long. At marsascala a person that i know has also caught about 6 in the region of 1.2kgs. But unfortunately the day afterwards some STUPID person has cast his nets all around the bay starting near Grabiel which at certain places it is not more than 4 / 5 feet deep. Basically he closed the whole bay and I have saw him doing so. Immediately I phoned the police HQ to advise who is in charge but nothing happened. A patrol boat came at the mouth of the bay remained there for 15min and left.

I went to Mistra about 3 weeks ago straight after the very bad weather (when the awrat intially escaped) but most of the fish that were there we very small.
I caught about 10 but only 2 were in the kilo region the others were 6-10cm (very under sized) and the fish were EXTREMELY cautious/scared..Whilst i was there i had a word with a good freind of mine who was there who told me the previous morning of the day before (he started around 3am) he had caught about 40 all decent sized but in the evening he dropped by mistra on his way to work & the same thing a guy dropping a net........

TOO BAD SEEMS THAT FISHING IS BECOMING DEAD AS FROM SHORE, AND IN THESE DAYS ITS MORE. I WAS LIKELY TO GO FISHING NEXT SATURDAY MAYBE I GET A NICE FISH BUT HEARING THIS I DONT THINK I AM GOING

This weekend there is bad weather forecasted. I don't think it will be a good idea. Although still if you are going to try u aren't going to loose anything neither.

robbygee

yes you are right but with all these boats putting fishing nets all over the place i guess its no good to fish. Unless you dont have any suggestion of a good place near the south of malta to go fishing

Two weeks ago, I went fishing on the pier in Bugibba and caught a couple of small "Awrat", but at sunset I too saw a fisherman casting his nets and surrounding the bay.

Last year I also went to Marsaxlokk next to Delimara Powerstation. No fish over there, and at sunset a fisherman with a small boat cast his nets.

No wonder we cannot catch any decent fish!!!

it happened to me too, just before march started, i went to sajrinjs, u qabel ma dalam zewg zaghzagh addew clikki clikki fuq luzzu, jitfaw ix xbieki (nets). when the nets they had on board were all thrown out, they went for their second set of nets.....

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.  Teach him how to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Men and fish are alike.  They both get into trouble when they open their mouths

one of the best places for mullet is bugibba near gillieru
you have to bait up the area first to attract them to one place
a couple of years ago i caught 24 caplati over 2 kg each in a day (my arms where too sore to go the next day)
