I recently found out that the butt section of a trolling rod needs to be carefully chosen. If you use rod holders on your boat, especially the metal ones, you need a durable butt that also slides out easily. Traditional foam type rod butts which are of the same or similar material to the grips (they could even be hypalon) dont slide out from the rod holder that easily when you've got a fish on.

I've noticed this but not paid attention to it before as I thought it was normal. However it seems you can get a uni-butt which is all aluminium below the reel seat which takes care of this issue. It also finishes in a gimbal for use with fighting belts etc.

On alternative to the unibutt is a slickbutt which is the same principle but isnt aluminium but some kind of smooth durable material that slides out of the rod holder easily.

Both these types of butts are also alot more durable as I've seen traditional butts started to shave/wear off their material when coming out of rod holders.

You probably wont find these on cheap/cheaper rods but if you're buying a decent one look out for this.

By the way, Grauvell have some excellent Boat/Tuna rods which feature Unibutts and gimbals etc. Was surprised to see several to choose from which is nice as they are available from Mister Fish.
