The 2014 alongi season is just about to start.  I'm sure all of you have stocked up on lures, line, tackle, insomma...anoything and everything that you might think will give you the edge when out chasing this formidable predator.  About this time, catch reports start trinkling in, usually fom the professionals who are out fishing long lines for the BFT.  However, this year the prevailing winds have kept most of the tuna fishing fleet in port.
Do share your thoughts here, and also let us know about first catches for the season.

What i have heard is that due to a low moon phase and cold sea temperature alungi bite will be good at july
Good season so far.....

Gafferrr...my adrenaline is getting high......I have not heard any sightings or catching from professionals too....i think that in 2 weeks time we will have the first bites !...remember we are still in the beginning of June.

Granitu...ive been fishing for this fish more than 2 decades now. I thought that by experience I could understand the Theory of the moon phase, and the currents and the temp of the sea, but be reassured, that the most recorded catching s of Albacore was when there was a full moon (suppost il hut jibqa jiekol il lejl kollu u ma jmissekx, jew inkella ipassi u ma ssibx hut).  I never went on these days, and I always was disappointed because of huge number of catches.  Today I learnt that no one should speak or show how much he understands this fish. All you need is when you have time to go fishing, you just plan and go, because when you are not expecting the fish, you will have the most catching of the season.  No one can understand the Sea, and no one can explain when the fish is going to strike. Believe me I'm explaining on experience !!

I belive you my friend.  I go through the same motions when fishing for Alongi.

Naqbel mieghek 100% habib li tipprova qatt m ghandek x titlef! (apparti diesel u shana ;) )

imma jin nemmen li naqsmu l esperjenzi importanti. Jin j alla kulhadd jaqbad ghax l alungi ha tkun abbundanti dis sena. (Normalment meta jkun hawn passa kbira ta tonn l alungi johrog stagun tajjeb)

I shared the thought of a very good professional fisherman my friend. Believe me he is rarely is wrong. Fyi isibuhom tal bushman, ghawdxin. hafna drabi ikunu jafu x inhuma jghidu u l informazzjoni li jtuk tkun attendibli.
Good season so far.....

What is the ideal depth for having the lure trolled at?

Depends on the sea conditions and where albacore are holding.

The_Gaffer

There are different schools of thought on this subject.  Some people prefer surface lures, others like to weigh down their lures using anything between 200g to 400g, others (me included) use a mix.  I usually weigh down the hard lures, while the soft skirted lures i leave swimming on top.  Again, it is really a matter of opinion.

Have not heard of any catches guys yet. Had 2 friend that went out and the only hookup reported was a swordfish that they lost during the fight. Seems that albacore is still lying deep.
Good season so far.....
