Hi guys. I'm looking at buying a handheld VHF. The main reason being safety when out there. Mine is a 15ft boat and I don't have space in the console to opt for a fixed one. What are your views on such handheld VHFs? Should I go for a renowned brand such as Lowrence or others available locally are good as well? The power of such VHFs are typically 5W. And would you recommend DSC functionality? Would appreciate some tips and views.

Thanks.

My opinion - i would go for an EPIRB - more reliable than a handheld vhf.

A fixed unit has far more power than a handheld although they do work.
Good season so far.....

But on the console surface I don't have space where to attach the bracket. The only option would be to cut the console and fix it in there, but then many told me to be aware of theft if it is going to be fixed and remain on the boat.
One of my reasons versus the handheld is what will happen if the boat battery dies? The VHF won't work if it is powered from the boat battery.

If you have just 1 battery, i think you ll be better off installing another battery than a vhf!  There are quite good vhf hand sets around which are adequate for cruising local waters.
I'd rather be fishing.....

Portable VHF for comms in local waters and ships in your area, and a McMurdo Personal Locator Beacon PLB like we had purchased as a group buy from Medcomms. I don't go out on the boat without it.
