Hi guys!  :D

My name is kris and i am quite new to this forum...only a couple of weeks. First of all great forum!! I've been trying to catch some cudas with lures.

I've tried yozuri crystal minnow orange/yellow:
http://www.yo-zuri.com/Products/ProdMinnow/CrystalMinnow.htm

I've tried another one from the rapala series, it's got green and black on the back, and yellow with orange on the bottom.

The problem is that the best i can get is barracuda chashing my lure for a short time and then for some reason they lose interest.  :'(

The tackle that i am using includes a spinning rod with spinning reel of the olympus brand. Main line 0.30/0.35mm. Normally i also use a wire trace attached to the lure.

I've tried different techniques like reeling in pretty fast, slow and very slowly, reel pause reel pause etc...but for some reason i still cannot get it right.

The places i tried spinning where tas-sliema quddiem il-knisja tan-Nazzarenu, tas-sliema wara it-tgi fridays, marsa, u valletta hdej il-pixkerijja.

I've took a good look on the barracuda sections on this forum and saw the suggestions from MartinB about type of lures.

Can anyone give me some tips on what i can do pls? Maybe i am doing something wrong...like wrong lures or the line is too thick or because i am using a wire trace...

I normally go to spin either very early in the morning before sunrise and before sunset.

Any help is greatly appriciated!!  :)

Tnx a lot guys!!

hi kris,
first of all it is normal that a barracuda chases the lure and does not give a bite, probbably sometimes they seem to see the line or they dont get fooled by the lure.your main line is good with a .35mm diameter.Normally i attach the lure directly to the line and that is all but some friends of mine use a small swivell usually black in colour attached to the lure.
Regarding lures i think any lure is good as long as it is not too small.I normally use 13cm or 14cm.Both the yozuri and the rapala are very good.I have found that barracudas often prefer the most coloured lures like the red head, firetiger and the clown and  yes try with different speeds and almost everywhere is good for fishing barracudas.
Keep on trying mate, you are on the right track and sunrise is better than sunset i think, but start spinning much earlier.

Thanks spiru for the fast reply! :)

Do you think i should include any poppers when i try to spin for barracuda? And when you use lures 13-14cm in size, do you use them in open waters (like cirkewwa) or are they good as well in harbours??

HI EVERYBODY,
THIS IS MY FIRST DAY IN THIS FORUM AND I LIKE MOST FISHING FROM SHORE FOR MULLET AND SPINNING FOR BARRACUDAS.I CAN TELL YOU KRIS THAT WHEN I FISH FOR CUDAS I ALWAYS USE 90MM OR 100MM I FIND THAT THEY ARE THE BETTER SIZES. ;)

hi spitec!!

Welcome to the forum!! :)

Does the barracuda get spooked cause of the thickness of the line your using?? Do you fish in calm weather or in strong winds?

regards,
kris

I USUALLY GO TO CIRKEWWA OR BUGIBBA BUT IT HAS BEEN SOME TIME I DON'T GO NOW.I FIND THAT THE BEST MONTHS FOR CUDAS ARE NOV-DEC.EARLY MORNING AND BEFORE SUNSET.

What lures are popular for barracuda?

Poppers? surface or diving lures?

Hi sptec and kris, welcome to the forum. I'm also new to the forum and its very worth going through some of the sections were one can find alot of information.

About what kind of lures one may use for barracudas are the floating red head, firetiger yellowish green with black striped back and silver mck. Mind you i have never fished for barracuda but got this information from the forum. I have just bought the above mentioned lures and hopefully will give it a try next week.

Will keep you posted if i catch any! ???

guys...i'm thinking of fishing for cuda....

but my question is..... is a line .4 thick for cuda?!?!?
probably the cuda, would see it aye?

to make things simpler...could i attach a metre long .35 or .3 line to make the line less visible?
would it work...?!
thnks

hi guys, it been a while since i spinned for lizz but i had quite a fair success with them, funnily enough in this time of the year i caught big ones(1.9kgs record).

You were using fire traces, which in my opinion are of no gain. the reason is that many think that lizz bites the line because they bite frontal. but its wrong, they bite sideways. the best is to use some good fluorocarbon as it becoming more difficult to fool them. make sure that the kulpari are of good size and shiny too, sometimes they go for it!!!!!(you will know cause you will get it from the last one and by a nick, plus irregular strikes while reeling in) i lost quite a lot like this >:( >:(

Also, i managed to devise a system which works a lot. i bought a power sardine attractant that  i found available from america.. you just put it on the lure and the lure has a scent, which fools a lot of fish. the fish doesn't have a good eyesight in my opinion but excellent feel which helps.

kris, i often encountered that problem. the best way is to see whether there is bait fish around. if there is bait fish, it will be difficult to catch one. also be aware that the rod does not have a lot of bend(excessive) and responds equally to a strike, else you will lose the time and the fish. i used a light ledgering rod for a very long time for lizz and i don't know how much of them did i lose because i wouldn't  strike.

last but not least, it is very unpredictable, sometimes they bite like crazy sometimes they wouldn't be interested. guess they are like women :D :D :D

Good luck
nick
