It seems you already lost hope, as i told you it has now been a year since i started spinning and only recently i caught my first cuda. Many who do not know or didn't fish with me would say something is wrong the persons who fished with me always told me do not get discouraged.

If everything else is ok it might be you are like me born under an unlucky star (mlt "twilidt taht stilla hazina") lol :D

do not get discouraged

Blaze

yes I guess you're right. its easy to get discouraged when I've been out at least 20 times and have not landed anything yet. But I still enjoy being near the sea in the peace & quiet of the morning.

So with spinning from land its mainly a cuda we can catch, or we can catch other fish in their right seasons like Cerviola???

Cos soon I think other migratory fish will be around.

Robby9

There are many fish you can catch with spinning not only cudas.you can catch cerviola, sawrell, spnott(sea bass) etc.last time i went spinning cerviol was following my lure a couple of times but no one bite.

Other fish that can be caught...dentex, "plamtu", bullet fish (tumbrell).

Then there are the unusual squid , serran, lizard fish (skalm),etc. Have a good look at the forum you can get a better idea i think

Sounds like I need a bigger lure! The one I bought from the shop in Msida is only the length of my thumb! Flew quite nicely though. Oh well! Standing at Tigne Point watching the sun rise over Valetta across the harbour was an awesome experience :)

LOL N00B!  ::)

what you were using is called a spinner....... what you should have been using was a minnow type lure(that actually resembles a fish) eg, Rapala X-Rap, Yo Zuri minnows, Strike pro and the likes.....

Isn't this the spinning section? This is so confusing  :D

This is all still brand new to me, but thanks for the advice, my dad is out there at the moment so I'll tell him to get to the fishing shop!

robby017

yes, its the spinning section, and you do use a spinner for spinning, its just that, odds are you'll get more strikes in the ares you were on a minnow type lure than a spinner.... those spinners are used from rocky cliffs in deep water for atlantic bonito and little tunnies...

I'm still in the caught no fish yet status. I went Saturday, but the sea was a bit rough and I went again on Sunday but nothing. Not even a Lizz following my lure :-((((

The sea was calm on Sunday so when the Lizz time had finished at about 7 am I started experimenting with different lures and noting their swimming motion. All the branded lures are good. But in my opinion (i'm no expert) the Yo-Zuri had the most life like swim. And its the least lure I use! So I will concentrate on that lure next time!

Yo-zuri crystal minnows have a very realistic swim action!! the only slight gripe i have with them is they not the best as regards casting.Don't worry about not catching anything yet, just keep on cracking those lures out and you get something mate! i was just watching a documentary on National Geographic (i think its called monster fish or smething like that) and there was a segment on giant trevally fishing in australia and this guy hadn't had a touch all day, whilst all his mates had caught some very nice ones and while they were packing up for the day he half heartedly flicked out the last cast of the day..and caught a world record GT  ;D i guess the moral of this is,Stick with it mate!

Hi Martin, Yeah true. but i'm kind of embarrassed saying that I go fishing but I haven't caught anything yet. The other day on the documentary you mentioned a man caught a swordfish or marlin from his canoe! I didnt see it from the beginning but I assume he had a lure and he was sort of trawling.

Cheers Mate.

Nothing to be embarrassed about! it can happen, esp with lure fishing! Not the 1st time ive been fishing and caught nothing and my fishing buddies have caught a fish each or vice versa..go figure! I missed that series of the documentary! shame! cos you have to have a serious screw loose to catch a marlin from a canoe  :o !! Its quite common for them to "attack" a fishing boat when they are being brought up to the gaff,so you can imagine what a marlin could do to a canoe if it was inclined to.....The phrase "like a hot knife through butter" springs to mind  ;D

I ve cought cudas on many different lures in fact i once cought a small cuda on a lure that was bigger than the cuda itself .

If you see a cuda following your lure reel in faster they might snap at it.

I am assuming you were spinning in Marsa .

Barracudas in Marsa KNOW what a lure is . Your best bet to catch a cuda is before sunrise. if the cuda happens to have just woken up and is still dreaming of his dream fish he ll bite otherwise he ll look at your lure and think , look a new firetiger 12 cm .

Seriously the current barracudas over there are RESIDENT.

They've seen more lures than an emploee at Mr fish .

13 Foot Seastar 400 (bahri kind of)
15hp Suzuki
3.5hp Seagull 40+ Longshaft  (Yes it works , yes it leaks oil)
3.0hp Seagull 40  Longshaft 60 years and it's my best one !
1.5hp Seagull 40- extra short shaft
5 hp Gutbrod Short shaft Air cooled.

I agree Lamacca. A lure is a lure. Plastic. Cudas have big eyes so as you said they will learn to select flesh from plastic. A few weeks ago when a cuda was following my lure it was big! Must have been well over 2 kilos. So that means a professor on lures and their brands.

Once I fished for Cudas in Florida. From a small boat. In 10 minutes we caught 3 big ones. Using live fish that is. First the guy I was with caught some small fish with a round net with weights round the diameter, that he threw.  Then he kept the small fish live in a picnic cooler. Then we hooked them and just let them swim away. And in minutes we had tight lines. Not good to eat there tho.
Because the species there of cudas have a lot more teeth, there was wire between the hooks and nylon.

Anyone tries with live fish here?

hi..
i m really crazy about fishing and i do competition in malta ..but believe it or not , i never fish spinning ...
i started fishing this teknik in the last 2 weeks and i bought just a kind minnow called jerk bait of STRIKE PRO ,, from when i started i went spinning about 9 times ,,, and the first day i got 7 serra ( i don t know how this fish is called in maltese,,the italian name is pesce serra  ) ,,,and than nothing at all till last time i went .. i got a nice barracuda ...
it s a bit boring but when u got the fish on the line ,, u understand that all the time spent doing the same movement was worth..
don t give up ... ;)
