Hi Guys, I just bought a simple electric reel (banax Kaigen 500) from ebay and am wondering about the power supply. My 18 ft open boat has two batteries with two mains making it possible to rivert to just one battery when the motor is off. Accordingly I am thinking of pluging the reel to the 'off' battery. Can someone tell me what type of power drain I would experience for ...say... 4 hours of bottom fishing at abt 100 mtrs? Do I need a dedicated battery for an electric reel?

Moonwalker

My Miya Command x4 take about 5A when loaded. So if you reel in half of the time it means that you only take 10Ah from battery. I prefer to use the same battery of the motor so when you move position the battery get some charge back.

Hi Moonwalker..tks for the info... actually when motor is on..I make sure that both batteries are connected... it is only when I am 'draining' power (fishfinder / reel) do I switch to just one battery - this ensures that the disconnected battery remains 'tale quale' and ready to go before starting up. So you would definitely do away with a dedicated battery...good..))

i use mine exactly likeu said steve andnever had problems. When I go with Busu I take a battery with me. I have used it for 3 times now. fishing in 240mts, 400mtrs and last time we went in 790ntrs,all this on the same charge. i placed it on charge after the third fishing trip. Oh by the way the miya cx4hp had to have a rest after reeling in twice from 700mrs with a 3kg weight. It over heated and we had to reel in the last 20mtrs by cranking handle........the Kristal kept going like it was still on the first drop.

Shanook, why do you use 3kg weight? Is it because you want to get it to the bottom quickly or because there is strong currents at that depth?
If you can't eat it don't kill it.

shanook

for those depths u need a weight from 2.5 onwards otherwise u never hit bottom. it takes a long time to get to those depths and even a small current will make a difference.

...guys///what are your experiences with baits for bottom fishing? squid / octopus? ARe there any fishing charts on the net?

busumark

tell fishfinder his bearings are very productive  :D  :D  :D. joking fishfinder

Moonwalker

3Kg is too much for the CX4. You should not use more than 2kg which is more than enough to reach 600m and over. And if you want to use more weight then slow down the speed when pulling up.
I use 1.25kg weights for all depths and can reach up to 600m if there is not much current.

Last time i tried in about 450 metres or so, there was some current but no tooo much, the problem i had is whith the current pushes the boat the lead at the bottom keeps moving and jumping on the bottom. is that something bad? i was letting some line out so its always on the bottom, and also do you feel the fish hit? i caught a xabla and didnt even notice

shanook

yes moonwalker if there isnt a lot of current then a 1.5 to 2 kg is ok. but in 800mtrs with a bit of current than u will have to let out a lot of line and as u know the miya4 doesnt have that much line to spare in 800 mtrs.
Lapsi its like fishing with a normal rod. if the line is on the bottom than u dont feel the strike but if the line is taught (that is weight off the bottom and the rod a bit bent with the weight) thean u will feel the fish or at ealst see the tip of the rod twitching.

Moonwalker

What do you catch in 800m shanook? Some shrimps maybe :)

busumark

you always catch the bottom or some nylon

shanook

yea  those.  oh and busu caught a gringu........so there must be something down there...it was not our intention to go deeper than 600mts but as the finder we had could make it to 400 mts there was no way to check the exact depth  apart from experience and the chart.
