thinking of buying an electric reel for deep sea fishing. does anyone have one?

ciappinu

Deepsea is the expert on electric reels. I am very interested too, however the intial investment is too high. I'm trying to design one myself out of a high speed 12v hand drill. The torque is good, and the speed should be fine.

you have to fish in dephts more than 300mt and you will have a 1.5kg weight and hopefuly a nice fish i dont know if the drill is strong enough. and if you have the line counter is better because you will know when the weight is nearly on the bottom

Will have to try it and I'll let you know.

I am looking at buying my first electric reel , I never fished in deeper than 120mtrs before & would like to give it a try this year. Can anyone that has experiance with these kind of reels supply me with model & make of the reel would be the best to invest in. I have been told that it is better to spend a little more money & get a deascent one in the fist place.

tatanka firstu have to decide how far out at sea u want to go. 450mts are close to the 10mile mark but deeper waters like 750 mtrs are in the 15 mile range these are approximate depths as on the south it gets deep closer to land.
u want to decide this as the depth makes a difference as to which reel to get.
Second selection do u want a rod type reel or one to mount on the boat.
for 450mtr range a miya epoch 4 or a Daiwa 1000 are more than enough. deaper waters u need the miya epoch 8 at least
If u want the mounted ones than the Kristal 410 is good for both 450 mtrs as well as the 750/1000 mtrs.
Always ber in mind that spectra is expensive. in the 450 mtr range an 80Lbs one is good but in the 750 mtr range u need a 140lbs one to bring in the hnizer.
If u need more ask, someone will always answer here.
Good luck regarding buying either u choose a Maltese shop or get it from abroad its ur choice.

Shanook, Thanks for taking your time & explaining the different possibilities. At the time being I will surely not go further out than 10 miles as I would not feel comfortable out there with the present boat , never know maybe one day will get a bigger one. So by the suggestions I rekon I will go for the miya epoch 4.

A couple of friends of mine told me that if you go out from the south and just past Filfla there is about +/- 250mtrs depth & good chances of catching some Bazug , Never caught any of them before.

So i guess that the reel would be more than sufficient for that kind of fishing. with regards to this reel is it ok to have it installed on a rod not mounted to the boat. Thanks again for the info. Not sure if I will buy it localy or off the net as there is a couple of bargains , Is there a specific Braided line that I should spool the reel with.

Just to let you know Tatanka and others that " Kristal" rods and reels are more cheaper from sicily than Malta.

Kristall fishing make boat mounted reels as well as rod reels. The rod reels are expensive, doesnt mean the mounted ones are cheap, but reasonable. The Miya Epoch 4hp is rod mounted so u need to buy a rod as well.
do u want to buy a second hand one or brand new. Yes the line has top be spectra line because of the thin diameter and NO stretch otherwise u will never feel the fish biting.

ganni

anyone tried the XL 410 of kristal fishing?? what's ur opinion about it??

can you regulate the spped for the retrieve?? or is it fixed at 80m/s?? and if so is it a problem??

thanks in advance

there is one that has speed control (expense goes up naturally). its different from having a rod reel.
U can make a seperate speed control unit if u want to (reduced expense).
try to buy the one that has auto stop otherwise u can lose ur line and fish.
apart from that happy fishing. Oh its bulky compared to rod reels.
My retrieve is 0ne and a half times faster (miya epoch)

10q 4 d reply mate.

but are there any kristal fishing reels with the auto stop??

from ta bormla in mosta there's an offer on the rod if you buy together and he has dyneema 0.35 31kg at a reasonable price as well

ON XL 630 & XL 635 models drop weight recommended 500g (they carry 2 years guarantee)

I will be building a variable speed box for Kristal Fishing reels (should work for other reels too which do not have electronics inbuilt). Its still in sketch but hopefully first sample will be ready soon. If anyone is interested PM me. Still have to calculate price also.
