Man u rig way to heavy for alungi......

I personally don't think there's such a thing as rigging too heavy, except for costs. If you use fluorocarbon there's no reason to have rig at 40lbs etc which is what you need to do with std mono to keep visibility down.

Whilst I accept that for most people you can probably make do with 40-60lbs, if you do come across something bigger, like a bluefin or two on the same line at the same time as happened to us, you'll be happy you're not running light rigging!

If you have a small reel then granted no point unless you're running Spectra backing, but if you're using a bigger 50lbs class reel/rod then I personally believe in being prepared rather than losing out on that once in a season fish that might come along. It's a question of money of course, fluoro is expensive especially the heavy stuff, as are 50lbs reels/rods in general.

But I also like the peace of mind that with a 50lbs reel which can handle a good amount of line 650yards+ like the 115L or some of the 50's I have, you can take your time fighting a big fish, won't run out of line and are less likely to have a break midway through the fight.

Plus most trolling lures you buy from abroad will always come rigged with a minimum of 130lbs mono unfortunately, which means re-rigging either way.

I've searched all over the main tackle shops in Malta, but couldn't find this particular lure.  Its the skirt that is particular, not the colours.  I'll try the small shops now, like George at B'bugia, or George at M'xlokk.  The head is still OK, though the skirt is damaged.  Best I could find was replacement skirts from ta' Bormla at Mosta.  But the skirt is not the same make, although the colours are the same.

Not sure if these will work for you http://www.anglerscenter.com/lures_replacement_skirts.htm

Williamson don't seem to offer replacement skirts so worst case you might have to buy a new one to get it identical.

The_Gaffer

Skip - bought the same skirts from ta' bormla in Mosta.  Thye are not like the one's on the lure.  I am more then willing to buy a new lure, just need to find the source

Did you go directly to Williamsom Lures's website and see if its still a current model. Otherwise the www !!

The_Gaffer

accessed the Williamson site, not in their current lineup.  Accessed a few fishing tackle websites that I know of, nothing there.  still trying to locate the lure.  Skip, this is a killer lure, caught over 300 Alungi on this particular since I bought it 10yrs ago.  Lost it last year to a giant pastardella...had the fish reaady for gaffing, and the current just suddenly changed direction. Had the line tangled in the prop, and the fish cut the leader...lost the fish(no worries) but also the lure.

Try www.cabelas they have a good selection of lures.Skip, why do you want to crimp the line if I re-rig the lures with flurocarbon, why not tie them on?
If you can't eat it don't kill it.

shanook

did u try ZUKER lures. If u have a close up of the lure one might identify it. I have seen those particular skirts they are like tapered ones if my memory serves me right not just long straight strips.

Hi Keith, I think if you look closely at your lure you will find it has been crimped and then has a plastic type heat shrink protector over the crimp. They are considered to give better results I believe than tying a knot, though I stand to be corrected

redbus9

Hi Skip,I,ve had another look, they are knotted for sure.
If you can't eat it don't kill it.

Even easier to change then :)

Hi Guys,

Posted some pics of the Williamson lure in question in the Gallery-Miscellaneous Section.  It is 10inches long, and composed of 3 layers.  Went to fishing world, but they said they don't have this lure.  Not in the current lure line up of lures offered on the Williamson site either.  Tried finding a contact for Williamson lures, but there isn't any on their site.  If any of you come across this particular lure on the web, please let me know.

Are u sure thats a Williamson lure? I have my doubts. Looks like its a custom made lure, but again somewhere I saw those skirts if only I remember where. I had a look on internet of all the lure manufacturers that I know of and nothing. Did the lure have feathers or just skirts. if u keep the original u can always manufacture one urself. the head being in Stainless or brass or resin.See what u can do if not let me know and I try to help u in anyway i can

The_Gaffer

Hi Shanook,
Yes, definitely a Williamson, it says so on the logo embedded in the head.  No, no feathers, just 3 plastic layers.  I have thought about producing the same lure myself.  The head would have to be resin, the colour of the plastic layers might be problematic to source.  However, I still beleive that somewhere out there (on the internet) some online tackle site might have this particular lure in stock.  We'll see.
By the way Shanook, are you from B'Bugia, do you know a guy called Yanis...also a great big game fisher having a Kaptan 18' twin Toyota diesel inboard?
