I was just reading about your problem and I'm not a mechanic but that was just was I was going to write to you that it must be a gear box problem since the engine is running at high revs perfectly.

Thanks for update john and interesting as well. I wonder whether you stressed the gears/bearing when it was running all that extra weight. Makes sense in hindsight that something in the gearbox might give way
