hi,

I am new to spearfishing and I am going to give it a try now.

But I am confused what setup to start up with...

What size of a spear gun? do I start with a bullet or "froxxna" ? air or elastic ?

fins ?

Mask and snorkel ?

and a signal buoy

I am not going to buy a wet suit at the moment because it is a waste of money if i'll give up spearfishing but if ill like it I buy one the next step.

I am trying spearfishing in coastal areas.....

any more equipment is needed on my first try ?

Help will be more than appreciated.

Granitu

Actually the wetsuit is not a waste of money.... 1st signal... always

I would rather think that buying a gun at this point in time is a waste of money.....

before you should check that you can dive and equalise without problems... and develop some freediving skills... and you would enjoy spearfishing then...

Else my friend you will end up being pissed off because you cannot catch fish and start spearing small fish that are not yet good to be eaten...

We all did mistakes (myself included), you have the opportunity to learn from our mistakes. At some point in time in my younger days i used to go just freediving to improve my apnea skills. - so that i can be spearfishing one day.

Hope it helps you.
Good season so far.....

Salvimar is a very good brand - not very reasonable prices but you get for what you pay for. The guy of Salpa Sub (the shop who imports salvimar in Malta) an italian is an excellent source of information my friend.

He is also an expert in Ballistics and in an unbiased opinion... he is the most technical person on spearfishing equipment in Malta.

Had the opportunity to go to his shop a month ago and was impressed with the technical knowledge of the person. He sells on facts.

Before breathing, focus on the equalisation technique. Longer breathhold at sea is mostly achieved when one is relaxed and performing the dive relaxed.... it will come naturally then.

Lastly, respect the sea and the sea will respect you back.
Good season so far.....

as mask for spearfishing I find them good the ones which are low volume and snorkel I have one with valve to eliminate water from getting in mouth ecc.
Fins I bought a set from the italian man at wied il-ghajn, made from soft plastic which are long and have a special feature which helps you move easily in water was around 75e very good for deep dives.

I began spearfishing using a 50cm gun but in 2 month i upgraded for 75cm gun using bullet, first you swear a bit not hitting the fish but then by time you make great accurate shots.

if using bullet buy the 'virga shiha mux bullet kamin' more stable and accurate.

My mask is salvimar and the model starts with g....... It is all black.I bought  a snorkel with valve too.
Fins I have bought some amateurs one but I  see how I go and I replace them .

Regards the harpoon....I was thinking of starting off with a 75....(as many people I talked to suggested)

any good brands or models ?

attach a reel to it ?

start with a bullet ? or a fork type ?

i have a beuchat 75cm, cressi comache 75(just bought) and an omer cayman 100cm

for 75 I go with cressi, the comache i found it very good and very strong and accurate made great shots.

Hi bukkun I think that your are going a bit to fast . I think its better if you do as Granitu said if you dont want to waste money!!!!!
All brands make good spearguns but you have to learn and practise with the gun to make accurate shots . I use beuchat , mares , spora . they are all good guns but dont pretend that becouse you buy a good brand gun or expensive gun you are going to catch more fish!!!!! First you have to learn the first things ---  how fish reacts ,what type of fish you hunt, what fish to look for in different seasons . then you start learning the different techniques of hunting, LEARN ABOUT THE  DANGERS IN THIS HOBBY and then at this point you start spending money on the equipment

If you buy a 55 cm gun its only use is when you search fish under the rocks so it is best armed with a fork, then if you buy a 100cm + it is not good to use under the rocks  but for open water shots so its better if its is armed with a bullet head and a reel. If you buy a 75 you can use it for agguato technique , and also to search fish under rocks  ;) about the reel on a 75 I think its a total waste of money!!!!

Learn to hunt and then start investing in your hobby

thanks guys....

I understand what you are trying to say that first I have to learn how to react, bring some skills and so on before the shoot.....

But I am not that new to underwater life.....I used to go with my friends for sea urchins, octopus and targeting some fish with "froxxna"

Now I am am going to buy the suit.....I am mainly swimming in summer because in winter and colder days I practice another hobby.

What mm ?
Full suit ?
black or camo ?
Gloves?

and about the weight belt ?

How much weight do I need ? I weigh 73 kg and I am 172cm tall

I am buying the suit and weight and trying to gain some skills and be a little bit confident with sea.,..then I'll buy the gun like everyone suggested...

damateur

You want an advice my friend? It is not worth all the effort and money you invest in at this stage that our seas have come to. The Maltese islands immediate coastal waters are so poor that you might end up delusive. Think well before you start investing money and time in this sport.
