the law i quoted does applies the same rules for trailers as for normal cars. of course, maybe there is some other legislation which i have not yet traced. however, i also went through the legal notices (www.doi.gov.mt) published in 2010, which should also include local council bye laws, and I did not find anything. Perhaps the administrator can ask the warden system (local enforcement system) on helpline@les.gov.mt

Some more rules on trailers:

Article 92 of the quoted Motor Vehicles Regulations (MVR):

Every trailer exceeding 100 kg. unladen shall be equipped with a brake operating on at least two wheels in the case of a trailer with not more than four wheels and on four wheels in the case of trailers having more than four wheels.

Article 97 MVR:

Obligatory lights: in the case of a loaded trailer, the lights on such trailer shall be two at the rear bottom of the trailer (one on each side thereof) and two at the rear top of the load (one on each side thereof).

These lamps shall in the case of the front lamps emit forward a white or yellow light or such other light as may be approved by the Authority and in the case of the rear lamp exhibit a red light to a reasonable distance in the reverse direction.

Guys just called honorary secrertary at Local council St. Pauls. Mr John camilleri.
This issue started at Mellieha.
Contraventions are still being issued.
He was promised by Police inspector at depot that these will refrain from issuing contraventions but they did not care and went on.
He sent an e-mail to A/C Baileys but he did not reply back.
Please send e-mails to police at cmru.police@gov.mt
since that they are still giving contraventions.

@sg - Those rules seem more oriented towards cargo trailers not boat trailers.

the MVR defines a trailer as "any wheeled vehicle without mechanical power of its own, designed to be drawn by a motor vehicle for the purpose of carrying persons or goods".

Yes Adrian £6.50 at Mumbles, Swansea for launch (3hrs either side of high water), then parking of boat & trailer in a car park at the top of the slipway.
£10 to launch & park vehicle & trailer at car park at the top of the slipway (launch at all states of the tide)
I reckon that at the current exchange rate thats about 8-12 euros per boat outing on top of your fuel, not cheap this boating with fuel at £1.25 ltr (1.5 euro ltr)
Small Boating in the UK has been described as "standing under a cold shower ripping up £10 notes" not too far off an accurate description!

do not give any new ideas about more payments and taxes! At 10 euros per launch i would become bankrupt in short time.

today someone in a prominent position, working in one of the head depts. just adviced me to kill the issue and make no fuss of it anymore.

Actually this is how things go in our country .....

this is like what happened with minimum sizes of fish regulations!

the less we mention the more things stay the same.

Was that GOOD advice? in that if you keep quiet perhaps it will go away? or was it BAD advice meaning that they wanted no opposition? ???
I am always suspicious when "somebody in a prominent position" gives me advice, that usually means that our "representatives" have made a decision not on behalf of their constituents, but despite them! >:(

So can we get some conclusions?
If you park car and trailer (attached) in a parking space where there are no "No trailer" signs you should not be fined right?
And does the number plate need to be attached to the trailer too if the trailer is attached to the car?

I did as much research in contacting all authorities concerned.

Yesterday i sent my complaint letter to Police,TM,DOI,and all local councils in the vicinity of the coast.

Received an acknowledgement from police till now.

Police are still enforcing this.
As I stated earlier. You cannot park no matter what. The police made it clear that you have to take back the trailer in the garage, and this makes not sense. I don't give up easy so I will pursue this matter. Not having lights and no. plate attached to trailor is another infringment, in fact some got fined 60euro only for the trailor parked in the road, and others 110euro.

I do not want to pay any fines.

Subject: Boat Trailers

To whom it may concern.

A number of contraventions are lately being issued by The Police Traffic Control Section, where it regards boat trailers being parked in the streets. This was confirmed by various boat owners, and by Police Inspector at Police Headquarters. I was told that this is an old Law which was never enforced, but now it is, due to the complaints emerging from Local Councils.

I am also a boat owner, and lately I am leaving my boat garaged due to fear of being fined. I pay regularly my Insurance, road license, and the registration of the third no. plate, and still I cannot make use of my boat, since the fine charged is half a week's wage.

What makes this situation intolerable and unreasonable it that there is no way possible to act in accordance with regulations.

Malta is full of slipways, so where is one supposed to Park the boat trailer? Maybe in an area suitably provided for this purpose. But where is this? I was told that the trailer shout be put back in the garage, so imagine on Sunday driving all the way from Dingli to Bugibba, leaving the boat unattended at sea, and going all the way to Dingli to park my trailer, and same again in the evening, whilst another 40 boats are doing the same.

I already contacted TM, Local Councils, Police Districts and Headquarters, but nobody came up with a solution.

May whoever Manages Traffic on this island, come up with a solution before summer is gone.

Regards

Silvio Grixti.
